What are heat pumps and how do they work?

Air-sourced heat pumps convert energy stored in the air into heating energy.

The energy is literally drawn out of thin air by the heat pump mechanism and turns it into heat for hot water system.  The way this works is that a large fan draws air into the heat pump mechanism.  The heat from the outdoor air, even on cold winter days is transferred to a refrigerant (which boils at – 26 degrees Centigrade) via a heat exchanger or evaporator. 

With help from a compressor, the refrigerant boosts this energy to a higher temperature, which then transfers the heat through a condenser to the water tank inside the heat pump.
